3:00 PM
So far, Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay tops the speed chart
for the first week of practice, posting a 226.227 mph lap!

Katherine Legge (now in a Chevy) just completed the 3rd and final phase
of her ROP.

Spoke with Anthony Foyt out on pit lane this afternoon.  He very much
misses racing, but doesn't think he'll ever get in a race car again - he
doesn't even go to the races.

Now hearing that backup machines are getting prepared for Pippa Mann
and Jay Howard, both whom have funding for this race.  These backup
cars would presumably bump the two Lotus-powered cars out of the field
on Sunday.

Michel Jourdain experienced a fire in his engine compartment a bit ago.
Because of that, Honda told all of its teams to stop practicing until they
figured out what the issue was.  Not sure how they resolved that situation,
but the Honda teams were allowed back on track soon thereafter.

John Andretti, a fan favorite here at the Indy 500, is not participating in the
race this year.  He is now keeping busy with a new sprint car he's built for
his son Jarett, who will make his sprint car debut tonight at Gas City/I-69
Speedway.

Great crowd here in the stands, and especially in the pits and garage area,
where it's hard to walk anywhere very quickly.  Lots of corporate types -
great for the sport and this race!

12:00 PM
It's Fast Friday!  Another near-perfect weather day, with temps expected in
the low 80's - and NO rain in the forecast for the next few days!

The parking lots are full today - a great crowd on hand (it's about
time...expected better attendance this past week due to the great weather).

With speeds down this week due to the new car/engine package, officials
decided to increase the boost, which will add 40-50 horsepower...and
speed...on a day that is known to produce the fastest speeds of practice
each year.  No one really understands the long-term benefit for this race,
as this boost increase will only be available to the teams for qualifying
(they will reduce the boost back to pre-Friday levels for the race).  It's a lot
of work for the teams (gearing, etc. has to be adjusted to fit the new hp
limit) - in other words, this is being done for the fans in order to get them to
IMS for today and this weekend.

With the continued struggles by the teams powered by Lotus, there's talk
that several Chevy- or Honda-powered teams will pull out a 2nd or 3rd car
for qualifying (teams being mentioned are A.J. Foyt Racing, Ed Carpenter
Racing, and Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing).  Vitor Miera, who has run for
Foyt in the past, mysteriously appeared at the track yesterday, too (that
would be great - he's potent here at IMS and could win this race).
